What It Looks Like To Follow God with Jess Roscher

Jess talks about how she scaled her business by praying and seeking God's guidance. She explains how she takes big risks and looks for God's green light in her life, to act on what he is sharing with her.

[00:00:07] Welcome back to another episode of The Vision Pod where guests are hand-picked to bring value to your everyday life. Enjoy.

[00:00:27] Today we have Jessica here. Thanks for coming on.

[00:00:32] You bet.

[00:00:34] So you have a business right now. How did you get into that industry? How did you start your business?

[00:00:40] I started the business in 2006. I was approached by an oil and gas company called Encana.

[00:00:47] Now they're inventive. I think they've changed hands.

[00:00:50] But they were having problems with a bear at a job site.

[00:00:55] And I think this was close to the time when there was some bomb threats and stuff.

[00:01:00] There was just some concern about safety on job sites.

[00:01:03] And specifically with wildlife in this case.

[00:01:05] And so we got a phone call asking us if we had somebody who could deal with the wildlife situation.

[00:01:12] Okay. And so how did you know how to deal with it?

[00:01:15] Well, I had some experience.

[00:01:20] But also my dad had more experience.

[00:01:22] And so did my husband at the time.

[00:01:24] And so the three of us had a conversation about how we can deal with this.

[00:01:30] We also had quite a few friends that were in the CO service.

[00:01:33] And that was kind of our life because we were...

[00:01:35] And what CO?

[00:01:37] Conservation officer.

[00:01:38] Oh, okay.

[00:01:38] Yeah.

[00:01:39] And we were guide outfitters.

[00:01:41] So we were quite familiar with wildlife.

[00:01:43] And I've had quite a few encounters with wildlife.

[00:01:47] So my dad was very keen on helping them with that.

[00:01:52] What would you say your scariest encounter was?

[00:01:57] Um...

[00:01:59] Probably...

[00:02:00] Um...

[00:02:01] I would say in the bush.

[00:02:03] I was on a horse.

[00:02:04] Okay.

[00:02:04] Um...

[00:02:05] And I was leading a ride with probably 15 to 20 kids.

[00:02:13] And I saw a bear.

[00:02:15] But nobody else saw it.

[00:02:17] My horse could smell it.

[00:02:19] Um...

[00:02:19] So I...

[00:02:20] But my horse was used to smelling bears.

[00:02:22] Because we were around bears quite a bit.

[00:02:23] Yeah.

[00:02:24] Um...

[00:02:24] And I tried to figure out, okay, do I have to take this entire ride?

[00:02:29] How do I get them out of here and get them safe?

[00:02:31] That was really scary because there were so many kids.

[00:02:33] Wow.

[00:02:34] And this bear was so close.

[00:02:35] And I could see it.

[00:02:36] And we all had to ride past it.

[00:02:38] So...

[00:02:39] And I was at the back.

[00:02:41] Yeah.

[00:02:41] So I was just, you know, going through all these scenarios of how I was going to deal with this.

[00:02:46] And...

[00:02:46] And, um...

[00:02:48] Yeah.

[00:02:49] I actually just chose to be really quiet.

[00:02:51] And I was very young, actually, at the time as well.

[00:02:54] Yeah.

[00:02:54] So do you think if you said anything or...

[00:02:57] Or, like, got spooked and then freaked the kids out, do you think that?

[00:03:02] Yes.

[00:03:02] Because if I would tell...

[00:03:03] If I would have told anybody what was happening, the kids would have got scared.

[00:03:06] Then the horses would have got scared.

[00:03:07] Then they would have been not in a line, not quiet.

[00:03:10] And then the bear would have got scared or could have or got into, you know, changed into protection mode or whatever.

[00:03:15] You know, at that point, it was just an encounter.

[00:03:16] And they were...

[00:03:17] He was watching us.

[00:03:18] And we were just quietly filing by him.

[00:03:22] And, uh...

[00:03:23] Yeah, that's...

[00:03:24] It was a good decision.

[00:03:25] Okay.

[00:03:26] Yeah, if you could have...

[00:03:26] So for bear attacks, is it only the, like, the hungry bears that would attack?

[00:03:32] Like, if they don't have any food or...?

[00:03:33] Um, well, they'll be more keen to get food, for sure, if they're super hungry.

[00:03:38] Different times of the year.

[00:03:39] Um, that chance of, you know, when you encounter a bear, them attacking, changes significantly with how hungry they are, for sure.

[00:03:48] But more of the concern is when they're protecting something.

[00:03:52] Um, that's just such a natural thing.

[00:03:54] Yeah.

[00:03:55] So, yeah.

[00:03:55] They're kind of their territory.

[00:03:57] Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:58] If they're protecting their cubs or they're protecting their food.

[00:04:01] So, both of those things, if you run into a bear in that, um...

[00:04:06] Presenting like that, you're...

[00:04:07] Yeah, you're in trouble.

[00:04:09] Okay.

[00:04:09] And would you say that's kind of what you're passionate about?

[00:04:12] Or what would you say you're passionate about?

[00:04:13] I'm passionate about, um...

[00:04:20] Finding, um...

[00:04:21] The best way in a situation.

[00:04:23] So whether it's...

[00:04:24] Like, I...

[00:04:24] My background is training horses.

[00:04:26] So it's behavior.

[00:04:27] Um, I'm really interested in behavior of people.

[00:04:30] Animals.

[00:04:31] Um, and then into different situations.

[00:04:34] I think it's so interesting how people behave in a stressful situation.

[00:04:37] And then in a calm situation.

[00:04:39] Same with animals.

[00:04:40] Things change so quickly when you put stress on anything.

[00:04:45] Yeah.

[00:04:46] And that really interests me.

[00:04:47] For sure.

[00:04:47] Yeah.

[00:04:48] Um, because I like to, um...

[00:04:51] I love people.

[00:04:53] Um, and so I want to learn more about how people work.

[00:04:56] I also like protecting people.

[00:04:57] I think this is how I'm made.

[00:04:58] As a kid, I always protected my friends.

[00:05:00] Mm-hmm.

[00:05:00] I was the person who would stand up and be like,

[00:05:02] no, that's not going to happen.

[00:05:04] Uh, we're going to do this instead.

[00:05:05] And at a very young age.

[00:05:07] So, um, protecting people is something that I find a lot of satisfaction of.

[00:05:12] And I find there's other people in our culture that really like that too.

[00:05:14] For sure.

[00:05:15] Yeah.

[00:05:15] Um, so I was talking to somebody and he was saying that a leader is simply someone who

[00:05:20] sees a problem and solves it.

[00:05:22] So, so are you a problem solver then?

[00:05:24] Yes.

[00:05:25] Yeah.

[00:05:25] Yeah.

[00:05:26] Yeah.

[00:05:26] I, I, I, a creative problem solver.

[00:05:28] I would, I would, I would apply that to any part of my life.

[00:05:31] I would get a lot of satisfaction out of finding a solution that works for the most amount of

[00:05:37] people.

[00:05:37] That to me is the coolest thing.

[00:05:38] Yeah.

[00:05:39] Yeah.

[00:05:39] So, uh, what are some ways you express your creativity then?

[00:05:45] Um, I really enjoy music.

[00:05:47] Um, and I enjoy it for many reasons, what it does to a person, how it aligns you, um, how

[00:05:56] it can focus you and then also heal you.

[00:05:59] So to me, it's a really, um, giving kind of passion actually.

[00:06:05] Um, you give and get a lot in a healthy way.

[00:06:09] Yeah.

[00:06:09] Um, I think there's, we need to connect in different ways and creativity is one of them.

[00:06:14] And if you can find ways in your life to create, to connect in a healthy way, um, you

[00:06:20] found something, you found gold actually.

[00:06:23] For sure.

[00:06:23] Yeah.

[00:06:24] Yeah.

[00:06:24] So a lot of entrepreneurs are always swamped by how many ideas they have and everything that's

[00:06:31] going on.

[00:06:32] So how do you deal with all of your ideas?

[00:06:34] And then how do you know when is the right time to go for it?

[00:06:37] Because a lot of these ideas are good ideas.

[00:06:39] It's just a lot of them are also bad ideas.

[00:06:41] That is a, that is a great question.

[00:06:43] And that is something that I've spent a lot of my time dealing with in my life because

[00:06:47] I have a lot of ideas.

[00:06:48] I have books of ideas, business ideas, business plans.

[00:06:51] Um, I found a way to bet on horses and win because I trained horses.

[00:06:55] Like I found, I found some really cool things, but timing is a big deal.

[00:06:59] You can, especially with a horse, if you can, um, observe the correct time to change a behavior

[00:07:07] or to present something or to introduce something, um, you advance so quickly.

[00:07:12] But if your timing's off, it, it will take you so much time to get the same thing done.

[00:07:19] And I think that's the same thing in life.

[00:07:20] So I have really taken my ideas and I do run them by God.

[00:07:24] I, I put them in a book, I pray over them.

[00:07:28] And then, um, and then I really do ask like, is this the time for this?

[00:07:33] Or do I need to, you know, I also believe you get other ideas.

[00:07:36] Um, sorry for other people.

[00:07:38] Yeah.

[00:07:38] So I find, um, I get ideas and then I see other people do them.

[00:07:42] And I'm like, when I was young, I'd be like, oh, I wish, you know, I think I did something

[00:07:47] wrong.

[00:07:47] Okay.

[00:07:48] Like, oh, I should have done something quicker.

[00:07:49] I should have moved on that.

[00:07:50] I should have put more energy into that, but it wasn't actually for me.

[00:07:54] So sometimes you get ideas that you actually should give to other people and, and give

[00:07:59] it to them, even if it's a really good idea.

[00:08:01] I've had some solid ideas and businesses that I've given to other people and watch them

[00:08:05] succeed and gone.

[00:08:08] I'm actually okay with that because, um, I think I was 20 and I was asking God about this

[00:08:13] question.

[00:08:14] Um, what do I do with an idea that is really good, but I can't actually achieve.

[00:08:20] Um, and he said, I will always give you something to give.

[00:08:25] So I was free to give away cool because he would always replenish me.

[00:08:29] Yeah.

[00:08:29] So I could give all my, all my best ideas away if I wanted to, and he would give me more

[00:08:34] because there's no end to his good ideas.

[00:08:37] So I don't have to worry about that.

[00:08:39] That's the thing.

[00:08:40] Everybody's getting kind of worried about AI, but at the end of the day, there is a God

[00:08:45] out there who gives humans ability to create and they, and gives ideas to us.

[00:08:50] And so we can be creative with what, what he says.

[00:08:54] And then you can have peace in your creativity and in your ideas.

[00:08:57] You don't have to strive and cause that will actually distract you and stop you from doing

[00:09:01] a good job.

[00:09:02] So you can have peace and move ahead with, with great confidence because we serve a really

[00:09:10] big God.

[00:09:12] So how do you know, uh, you're hearing God's voice when you're praying about timing?

[00:09:18] Yeah.

[00:09:18] So, um, that's a practice that you, um, it's like lifting weights.

[00:09:22] It's like anything you, you need to practice it and do it and you need to fail and you need

[00:09:27] to go, Oh, that's what that was.

[00:09:29] And you need to spend time with God.

[00:09:30] Like, you know, if, if your friend walked in the front door, you would know who it was just

[00:09:37] by their way they were walking.

[00:09:38] You know, you would know who it was.

[00:09:40] And God's voice is the same.

[00:09:41] Like he, you do need to know and be familiar with his voice.

[00:09:45] I believe that, um, it's like more like a, you know how they had radios and cars.

[00:09:49] They don't really have radios.

[00:09:50] Do you remember radios?

[00:09:51] I have radio in my car.

[00:09:53] I think we're like radios and we can tune into whatever we want.

[00:09:59] So that's our free will.

[00:10:01] We can tune in and focus on whenever we want.

[00:10:03] I believe God is speaking to everybody and we just need to turn on the right radio station.

[00:10:09] So, um, how much time do you spend finding your radio station and listening?

[00:10:15] So, you know, when you do that, then you, you start to be like, Oh, and then you listen

[00:10:20] and you, you have to, you can't do it without faith because faith, um, has feet.

[00:10:25] So you have to have action.

[00:10:27] Yeah.

[00:10:27] Yeah.

[00:10:28] Yeah.

[00:10:28] So how often do you, uh, spend time praying and kind of, kind of trying to figure out what

[00:10:34] God is saying to you?

[00:10:35] Yeah.

[00:10:35] Um, I would say that's constant.

[00:10:38] Okay.

[00:10:38] Yep.

[00:10:39] Yep.

[00:10:39] I, I have to, um, um, align myself.

[00:10:45] I do, I, all the time I need to, and especially if there's a lot of stress, I've had some,

[00:10:48] you know, a good amount of stress in my life.

[00:10:50] And I think everybody goes through that.

[00:10:51] Um, and it's very important to me, even to the point where, I mean, I've walked into a

[00:10:57] health food store.

[00:10:58] I mean, like, I know I need to take something, but I'm not exactly sure what it is.

[00:11:01] So, okay, God, you know where my body's at and I don't have the technology to put my

[00:11:05] finger on something.

[00:11:06] And, you know, can you just let me know?

[00:11:08] Yeah.

[00:11:09] So, uh, yeah, I, you know, showed me what to get and actually didn't take it.

[00:11:14] So I put it on my counter and thinking that that's probably a good idea.

[00:11:19] Um, and then I went and got some testing done and they, they said the exact bottle of what

[00:11:25] I had bought.

[00:11:26] Crazy.

[00:11:27] That's what they recommended I take.

[00:11:29] Wow.

[00:11:29] I took a picture when I went home and sent it back to the doctor and I was like, was

[00:11:32] this what you're talking about?

[00:11:33] And she said, yeah, that's the one.

[00:11:34] Wow.

[00:11:35] So, so then, you know, those things happen in your life and you can really be clear that

[00:11:40] God is speaking to you and he is showing you like, he cares about even the small stuff.

[00:11:43] So yeah, for sure.

[00:11:44] That's awesome.

[00:11:45] Yeah.

[00:11:45] You kind of have to, you, you have to know that, like I made a point, I wrote it on my

[00:11:53] wall.

[00:11:54] I said, um, I can hear God's voice.

[00:11:56] And then, and then when you write that and you say that out loud, it's, it just like

[00:12:01] establishes it.

[00:12:02] And then, you know, that, yes, I can, I can trust this.

[00:12:05] And then you, you see it more and more and you pray for things and they come to pass

[00:12:09] and yeah, yeah, it's good.

[00:12:11] Yeah.

[00:12:11] And there's hearers, like some people see things, you know, God has so many ways of

[00:12:17] speaking to you.

[00:12:18] I mean, and I think it's everybody, I have people who, um, would say they're not a Christian,

[00:12:23] but they, the way they speak, they actually are hearing God.

[00:12:28] They just don't know it yet.

[00:12:30] You know, it's, it's so neat.

[00:12:32] Yeah.

[00:12:32] That's cool.

[00:12:32] Yeah.

[00:12:33] He's, he's for everyone for sure.

[00:12:36] Um, so yeah, you said you've, uh, been through some hard times and God's been there for you.

[00:12:42] What's a, you have a cool story about that.

[00:12:44] Um, yeah, like I, I feel like, um, with my kids, um, we've had some pretty traumatic things

[00:12:55] and God has, um, just protected us from, from pretty difficult times.

[00:13:03] Um, my, my son has a brain tumor, but he is still alive.

[00:13:08] He's had it since he was four.

[00:13:10] Um, and he is, you know, doing great.

[00:13:14] That's not a, that's not a small thing.

[00:13:16] Um, and so, uh, I think daily, I really believe that there are daily miracles that we see all

[00:13:25] the time.

[00:13:25] Um, I would say he is, he wouldn't say that about himself, but I would say, um, yeah.

[00:13:33] And, um, yeah.

[00:13:36] Yeah.

[00:13:37] So do you make it, um, a point to kind of focus on the, the bright side and the, and the good

[00:13:45] aspects of the thing?

[00:13:45] Would you say?

[00:13:47] Yeah.

[00:13:47] I think it's really important what you focus on.

[00:13:49] Um, not a toxic positivity that everything's great because actually things are really tough

[00:13:54] for a lot of people and myself included, you know, that's a real thing.

[00:13:57] Um, but there's so much goodness as well.

[00:13:59] Like God is at work and, um, to take off your lenses of negativity, I think is very important.

[00:14:08] And then to discipline yourself to live like that.

[00:14:10] I have, I feel like I've lived a life like that.

[00:14:13] Um, and I, and I love God's sense of humor.

[00:14:16] So there is, it's important to focus on other aspects of life.

[00:14:19] So I've never heard of toxic positivity.

[00:14:22] What, what, what is that?

[00:14:23] Um, that's, that's a, it comes from a good place.

[00:14:29] I think it's when people try to be positive in a difficult situation, but, um, instead

[00:14:35] of allowing themselves to grieve or allowing themselves to see the reality of the difficulty,

[00:14:40] they choose to just see all the positivity.

[00:14:43] So it's an unbalanced positivity.

[00:14:45] Okay.

[00:14:45] It's almost fake.

[00:14:47] Okay.

[00:14:47] So would you say that's kind of like what, uh, Solomon's talking about in Ecclesiastes

[00:14:52] where he says there's a time for mourning, a time for like joy.

[00:14:57] Yeah.

[00:14:58] Yep.

[00:14:58] Yeah.

[00:14:59] Yeah.

[00:14:59] Yeah.

[00:14:59] I think that's, I think that's a good point that you don't always need to, there's no

[00:15:05] need to fake it.

[00:15:06] No.

[00:15:06] And, and such good things come out of grief and sadness, like beautiful things.

[00:15:11] So you kind of rob yourself of, um, a, a really, um, a depth to your life and a beauty

[00:15:19] to your life when you don't acknowledge that you are grieving or that something is really

[00:15:24] difficult.

[00:15:25] Okay.

[00:15:25] Like, uh, like what would you say that has come out of your life from grieving?

[00:15:30] Um, um, a very deep awareness of heaven and an ability to live daily with an understanding

[00:15:39] that you are a citizen of heaven.

[00:15:40] Okay.

[00:15:41] Yeah.

[00:15:42] So, uh, probably one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, uh, seek first the kingdom and,

[00:15:48] and all these things shall, shall come.

[00:15:50] So what?

[00:15:50] So what does that, what does that mean to you?

[00:15:54] And what do you think that means?

[00:15:55] Um, that is an invitation to peace.

[00:15:59] How so?

[00:16:00] Um, because when you seek first the kingdom of God, um, what's the kingdom of God, right?

[00:16:07] What's the fruit of the spirit?

[00:16:08] To me, they're very similar.

[00:16:09] Um, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness.

[00:16:12] Yeah.

[00:16:12] Um, and when you focus on those things and cultivate those things in your life, um, you

[00:16:19] can handle God adding other things to your life.

[00:16:22] It's very difficult to handle success.

[00:16:25] You have to be a very strong person to handle success well.

[00:16:29] Um, and, and to not let it sway you.

[00:16:31] You have to be able to handle, if God wants to give you billions of dollars, you're going

[00:16:37] to need some real solid character in your life.

[00:16:40] Yeah.

[00:16:41] Yeah.

[00:16:41] That's a big burden.

[00:16:43] Yeah, for sure.

[00:16:43] Yeah.

[00:16:44] Um, yeah, I heard it, uh, talked about that kingdom of God, kingdom means king's dominion.

[00:16:50] So it's basically, um, submitting to ultimately God's authority over your life.

[00:16:57] Yeah.

[00:16:58] I, I think that's, um, that, that's kind of not funny to me, but like God is sovereign.

[00:17:05] Like you can submit, you don't have to submit.

[00:17:07] God is still God.

[00:17:08] Like it doesn't actually matter what you, it does matter what you do for yourself and

[00:17:12] where, what your life's going to look like.

[00:17:15] But God's God.

[00:17:16] That's right.

[00:17:17] Yeah.

[00:17:17] You can submit to that or not.

[00:17:19] Yeah.

[00:17:20] Every need will go.

[00:17:20] Yeah.

[00:17:21] Oh yes.

[00:17:21] Yeah.

[00:17:22] Yeah.

[00:17:23] Yeah.

[00:17:24] Okay.

[00:17:24] So how did you, um, grow your company so quickly?

[00:17:28] Um, yeah.

[00:17:30] Following God.

[00:17:31] Um, he gives me great ideas and I, so then I act on them and he, and there's difficulty

[00:17:38] for sure, but he blesses that.

[00:17:39] Yeah.

[00:17:39] Um, and, uh, it's been super enjoyable, really risky.

[00:17:45] Um, but it's calculated risks, but I think risk is very important.

[00:17:51] Yeah.

[00:17:52] Yeah.

[00:17:52] Taking risks, being willing to do something that you have never done before, but you kind

[00:17:57] of think you have the skills for.

[00:17:59] Yeah.

[00:18:00] Yeah.

[00:18:00] So has there been something that, uh, like an idea you got from God that really took your

[00:18:05] business to the next level?

[00:18:08] Um, yes.

[00:18:10] Uh, partnering with people you may never think to partner with.

[00:18:15] Okay.

[00:18:15] Right.

[00:18:15] And then even what partnership looks like, because, um, it can look like an all in thing

[00:18:20] when you partner with somebody, but it actually doesn't have to be, you can have different levels

[00:18:24] of partnership that is very beneficial to business.

[00:18:26] Um, I am all for working with people, not being a lone ranger.

[00:18:30] That's not a wise thing to me in business or in the kingdom of God.

[00:18:34] Um, we were meant to work together.

[00:18:36] So, um, finding creative ways to work with a diverse, um, people groups.

[00:18:44] So if you're out there, how can you, um, find a team to build around if you're looking, if

[00:18:51] you're looking to like go in together instead of just be alone?

[00:18:54] Yes.

[00:18:55] Find people that you admire and find people that are much better at things than you.

[00:19:00] Okay.

[00:19:01] Yeah.

[00:19:02] And see if they'll work with you.

[00:19:03] Yeah.

[00:19:04] Yeah.

[00:19:04] Yeah.

[00:19:04] Because, um, yeah, I mean, there's many reasons for that, but I think that's a solid business

[00:19:09] plan.

[00:19:10] Yeah.

[00:19:11] Yeah.

[00:19:11] Sure.

[00:19:11] Yeah.

[00:19:12] You know, you know, you know, know your skills and know what you can bring to the table, but

[00:19:16] look for people who you really enjoy being with.

[00:19:20] Yeah.

[00:19:20] Yeah.

[00:19:21] Because other people will want to be with them too.

[00:19:22] So is that, is that kind of what you had?

[00:19:24] You reached out to who you really enjoy?

[00:19:26] Absolutely.

[00:19:27] Yeah.

[00:19:27] If I don't like working with somebody, I do not work with them.

[00:19:29] Okay.

[00:19:30] Yeah.

[00:19:30] A fellow, I, um, I had a business outfitting, um, like guiding opening and a lot of my clients

[00:19:36] were the people, business owners from all over the world.

[00:19:39] So I, I really listened to what they said for, you know, their many years of experience,

[00:19:44] like years and years of experience of business.

[00:19:47] And, um, they said, you know, clients and people who work with you don't settle.

[00:19:53] Yeah.

[00:19:53] Yeah.

[00:19:54] Huh.

[00:19:55] So, um, do you find you work with people with similar personality than you or kind of opposite

[00:20:01] and balance out?

[00:20:03] Would you say?

[00:20:04] I'm not looking for people to balance me out that work for me.

[00:20:07] I'm looking for people to do what they do very well.

[00:20:12] So they don't have to have the same personality as me.

[00:20:14] They don't, I don't so much as look at for personality.

[00:20:16] I look for character.

[00:20:18] So what kind of character do they have?

[00:20:19] Especially my business.

[00:20:20] It's, it's security.

[00:20:21] It's like you have, you need to be very, um, good at what you do and very reliable.

[00:20:27] Um, so I look for certain character traits.

[00:20:30] Um, a lot of people can be, um, taught or a lot of people, there's people who want to

[00:20:35] grow their skills.

[00:20:36] And there's some basics that if they have, they, they can grow and be very successful.

[00:20:43] For sure.

[00:20:43] Yeah.

[00:20:44] Yeah.

[00:20:44] I think, I think your business is very, uh, unique.

[00:20:47] Uh, can you, can you kind of explain a little bit more what your, what your business does?

[00:20:51] Yeah, sure.

[00:20:52] So, um, the business is called Wilderness Protection Solutions.

[00:20:56] So we provide solutions to wildlife, um, encounters, preventing them, um, putting policies

[00:21:05] in place on job sites that are remote, um, that can help, um, let's help people work in

[00:21:13] a safe way with wildlife in the area.

[00:21:16] Okay.

[00:21:16] Um, whether it's cougars, wolves, bears, um, it's, it's an issue in remote work sites.

[00:21:23] So we provide solutions with people on site.

[00:21:26] So, um, they're there, they have a firearm, um, and they're there to protect the people

[00:21:31] they're working with.

[00:21:32] Um, also, you know, in, in different kinds of job sites.

[00:21:37] So it requires different kinds of people, different skill sets.

[00:21:40] Um, we also developed a training program so that people can become wildlife monitors because

[00:21:45] there's really no standardized training for this.

[00:21:48] Okay.

[00:21:48] So we've had to produce, um, courses that are recognized by the, the government and business.

[00:21:56] Oh, cool.

[00:21:56] Yeah.

[00:21:57] Yeah, that's cool.

[00:21:58] I think, uh, yeah, I saw a video they say like, uh, drop shipping was huge and then it

[00:22:06] was day training.

[00:22:07] And then now they think it's making courses.

[00:22:11] Oh, everyone, everyone is making courses.

[00:22:13] It's like the, it's a different course in your course, but it's probably the easiest thing

[00:22:17] to sell the ultimate dream.

[00:22:19] And then lie about how fast you can do it is a popular, it's a popular thing to do right

[00:22:25] now.

[00:22:26] Yeah.

[00:22:27] Unfortunately, the, the, with the people that work for me, they have to have some, a very

[00:22:33] interesting and unique skill set.

[00:22:36] So you can take a course and I could give you a course on how to be a wildlife monitor,

[00:22:40] but I wouldn't hire you.

[00:22:41] Yeah.

[00:22:42] Once you've had a lot of other experience and understanding.

[00:22:46] Would it be like calm, calmness under pressure kind of thing?

[00:22:49] Yep.

[00:22:50] And, and directly, and, um, a very, you need to be very savvy with firearms.

[00:22:55] Also reading the land.

[00:22:57] You need to be able to go and, and understand the biology of, you know, the, the climate you're

[00:23:05] in, um, what's growing, what's in season, what the bears will be eating.

[00:23:09] Yeah.

[00:23:09] I need to know a lot about behavior, behavior of people, behavior of animals.

[00:23:13] And, you know, in this situation, you know, when people get scared, they act very different

[00:23:18] than they normally would.

[00:23:19] Yeah.

[00:23:20] And same with animals.

[00:23:21] Yeah.

[00:23:22] So it's like the drowning person who wants to be saved, but doesn't want to be saved

[00:23:26] at the same time.

[00:23:27] Yeah.

[00:23:27] Drowns the two year old, you know, beside it trying to, you know.

[00:23:30] Yeah.

[00:23:31] And so you need somebody who is really calm and also calm under stress and very confident

[00:23:38] in their skills.

[00:23:39] Okay.

[00:23:39] Yeah.

[00:23:39] Very confident.

[00:23:41] So do you have, um, with all your ideas, have you started a couple, a couple more businesses

[00:23:47] to, on the side or you just stick, or do you just stick with the one?

[00:23:51] Uh, no, I've, I've had a few businesses, um, like the, the guiding outfitting business.

[00:23:55] Um, I trained horses for many years.

[00:23:57] I was, uh, um, a riding instructor for quite a few years.

[00:24:01] Um, I also taught swimming when I was in, where I started a business in the backyard pools

[00:24:05] and stuff.

[00:24:06] Yeah.

[00:24:06] Um, and that would probably be the most, oh, well, I actually, um, I did sell, uh, beef.

[00:24:14] Okay.

[00:24:14] Uh, for a while.

[00:24:15] So I would take beef from Alberta and then bring it to BC.

[00:24:18] Okay.

[00:24:18] And sell.

[00:24:19] Alberta beef.

[00:24:20] Yeah.

[00:24:20] Naturally, you know, hormone.

[00:24:23] Yeah.

[00:24:24] Free stuff.

[00:24:24] Yeah.

[00:24:24] So do you, um, find that in today's culture, there's like, uh, a lost sense of like the outdoors

[00:24:34] and nature and creation?

[00:24:37] Um, it's like a broken connection.

[00:24:39] Yeah.

[00:24:40] Okay.

[00:24:40] Definitely.

[00:24:41] Um, and it, I feel like it makes people sad.

[00:24:44] It makes children sad, um, cause they're missing out on something that they need.

[00:24:49] Um, I feel a lot of people are, uh, disconnected from some important things and being out in

[00:24:58] the wilderness, um, can bring you to your knees quite literally.

[00:25:03] Yeah.

[00:25:03] And I am very, that's why really we were doing the guiding outfitting, taking people into the

[00:25:10] wilderness.

[00:25:11] Um, it was quite wealthy people, like the demographic of people that were coming on that

[00:25:16] trip, um, were people who didn't have a lot of nose in their life.

[00:25:22] So, or a lot of difficulty at that point.

[00:25:25] Um, and so everybody needs to just be undone in the mountains.

[00:25:31] Yeah.

[00:25:32] Okay.

[00:25:32] Yeah.

[00:25:33] So is it a lot of, um, like out in the mountains where you, where you guys go?

[00:25:37] Uh, it was the wildlife monitor.

[00:25:38] Yeah.

[00:25:38] Yes.

[00:25:39] Okay.

[00:25:39] It's, it's, um, remote work sites.

[00:25:41] A lot of them we see on the coast.

[00:25:43] Um, we've gone to fish farms.

[00:25:46] We've gone to, I mean, yeah.

[00:25:47] So what's your, what's your favorite, uh, like scenery?

[00:25:52] Would you say like a forest or a mountain or a river?

[00:25:55] Like?

[00:25:56] Yeah, that's a good question.

[00:25:56] Um, I am a big fan of water and mountains.

[00:26:00] So I would say like a wicked lake in the mountains would be just, yeah.

[00:26:05] Like a really remote, beautiful colored water.

[00:26:08] It's usually really cold.

[00:26:10] So yeah.

[00:26:11] Do you swim?

[00:26:11] Yes.

[00:26:12] Nice.

[00:26:12] I definitely would go in.

[00:26:14] Um, yeah, that would be, that would be, I, you could fly me there right now.

[00:26:18] We can just go over there and do a podcast in the mountains.

[00:26:20] Yeah.

[00:26:20] That would be great.

[00:26:21] Yeah, that would be, yeah.

[00:26:23] That, the, the wildlife podcast is pretty cool out in, out in the mountains.

[00:26:27] Yeah.

[00:26:28] Yeah.

[00:26:28] Yeah.

[00:26:29] I think, uh, like there's something about cold water that's, that's really good for you,

[00:26:33] but.

[00:26:34] Yes.

[00:26:35] Difficult, but integrating.

[00:26:36] Yeah.

[00:26:37] Have you ever done any cold plunges?

[00:26:39] I have.

[00:26:39] Yes.

[00:26:40] I have done some cold plunges.

[00:26:42] I have this black one that I put on my deck in the winter time and chase really has been

[00:26:47] the best at that.

[00:26:48] I think you almost got pneumonia.

[00:26:49] He stayed in so long.

[00:26:50] Oh, wow.

[00:26:51] I was like, you got to get out kid.

[00:26:53] Yeah, no, I think it's good for you.

[00:26:55] So, um, when you're dealing with risk, uh, is there, is there any point that you're like,

[00:27:01] this is just, this is just too much.

[00:27:03] I can't, I can't do this.

[00:27:04] Or, or are you pretty much open to do everything?

[00:27:08] I'm pretty.

[00:27:09] Yeah.

[00:27:10] If I've, it's that, um, hearing and then moving in confidence.

[00:27:14] So if I've heard that this, that I got the go ahead, that I have an open door to do

[00:27:20] this, the not much would stop me.

[00:27:22] So have you pretty much gone all in a few times?

[00:27:25] Oh yeah.

[00:27:26] I feel like every day you go all in.

[00:27:28] Okay.

[00:27:28] Are you kidding?

[00:27:29] Yes.

[00:27:29] Every day you go all in.

[00:27:30] Every day.

[00:27:30] So what does that look like?

[00:27:32] That looks like listening to the best of your ability.

[00:27:34] That looks like coming in here.

[00:27:36] And so I did this, I played a lot of sports and we worked with like, um, it's like a movie

[00:27:43] reel in your head.

[00:27:44] Like you can play a situation in your mind and it's like a movie and you're in it and you

[00:27:50] kind of walk through what you're going to do.

[00:27:53] Um, and when you do that, I feel like it gives you a lot of, um, confidence, I guess, but,

[00:28:01] um, an ability to, to follow through.

[00:28:05] Okay.

[00:28:06] And so, and so why does that look like all in for you?

[00:28:09] Um, commitment.

[00:28:11] Okay.

[00:28:11] Yeah.

[00:28:12] You're committed to what you're doing.

[00:28:13] Yeah.

[00:28:13] Yeah.

[00:28:14] That to me is all in.

[00:28:15] Yeah.

[00:28:15] Okay.

[00:28:15] And you're willing to do what, what is necessary to make that happen.

[00:28:21] Cool.

[00:28:21] So it doesn't really matter what comes in the way.

[00:28:23] You just keep going.

[00:28:24] Just a big step of faith.

[00:28:26] Yeah.

[00:28:26] Yeah.

[00:28:27] It's like climbing around.

[00:28:28] It's like, you know, can be very difficult, but you just keep going.

[00:28:32] Yeah.

[00:28:33] When you were, um, starting out, were you working like super long hours and.

[00:28:40] Yes.

[00:28:40] Yeah.

[00:28:40] Putting in time and doing, um, very mundane, you know, I, I'm the person that I believe you

[00:28:48] go clean the toilet when the toilet needs to be cleaned.

[00:28:50] I absolutely, um, I would like to be a person that, um, you know, that person that has a

[00:28:59] very modest house and has a ton of money in the bank.

[00:29:03] Do you know what I mean?

[00:29:04] Like you don't have to, you know?

[00:29:08] Yeah.

[00:29:09] Yeah.

[00:29:10] Not all, not, uh, you're not big into flexing.

[00:29:14] Mm-mm.

[00:29:15] No.

[00:29:16] The, the flex to me is different.

[00:29:17] I, I would feel incredibly, um, satisfied with my life if I, if God would say, you just

[00:29:24] followed me so well.

[00:29:25] Mm-mm.

[00:29:26] You just, you just, I could just say, Hey Jess, you got this?

[00:29:29] Yep.

[00:29:29] Got it.

[00:29:30] I, that would be my, yeah.

[00:29:31] So what, what could you see yourself, uh, like spending how much money on?

[00:29:38] So the only, probably a really fast car.

[00:29:41] Really?

[00:29:42] Oh man.

[00:29:43] Yeah.

[00:29:43] Okay.

[00:29:43] What kind of car?

[00:29:45] Probably.

[00:29:46] I would, I'm more interested in the speed.

[00:29:48] I'm not so interested in the, so my son would probably say it goes this fast.

[00:29:53] It's like this, whatever.

[00:29:54] I'm like, well, if it looks pretty and it goes really fast, I don't actually care what

[00:29:57] it is.

[00:29:58] Okay.

[00:29:58] Same with a horse.

[00:29:59] Okay.

[00:30:00] I used to ride race horses and this one horse that he, I was riding him.

[00:30:06] He was like hilarious.

[00:30:07] He looked like a quarter horse.

[00:30:08] He didn't look like a thoroughbred Tom.

[00:30:09] He was a short squatty little horse and super plain looking, but he was a hot rod.

[00:30:16] So he was two and I was working him around the track and I was like,

[00:30:18] Hmm, this guy, he doesn't really want to run.

[00:30:20] Like most horses kind of want to, they get that kind of competition.

[00:30:23] They want to run.

[00:30:24] So I asked my friend, like, come out, meet me in the morning with the horse.

[00:30:28] And I want you to help me with this horse.

[00:30:29] So she comes in and I said, come right up beside me and just ride your horse with your

[00:30:34] nose, just right beside his, and then just go ahead a little bit and then come back

[00:30:37] and go ahead a little bit.

[00:30:38] And this horse didn't care.

[00:30:40] He just was so chill.

[00:30:41] Like super chill.

[00:30:42] Just loping along.

[00:30:43] And then he starts looking over and he sees this horse go back and forth and you can see

[00:30:47] his little brain figuring out competition.

[00:30:50] And we did that for a couple of mornings.

[00:30:52] And I tell you what, we lit a fire under that horse.

[00:30:55] He ended up winning the Canadian Derby.

[00:30:57] And he was like this little horse that was like, so just not looking like a race track

[00:31:04] star.

[00:31:05] Anyway, he just, uh, he had that fire.

[00:31:07] Yep.

[00:31:08] So, uh, is there, so do you have competition where?

[00:31:12] Tons of competition.

[00:31:13] Okay.

[00:31:13] Yeah.

[00:31:14] Tons of competition.

[00:31:15] And I refuse to look at it.

[00:31:17] Oh, okay.

[00:31:17] Yeah.

[00:31:18] So you're, you just.

[00:31:19] You gotta put blinders on.

[00:31:20] Okay.

[00:31:21] Yeah.

[00:31:21] I mean, it depends on who you are.

[00:31:23] You will get distracted by, there's so many things to distract you.

[00:31:26] So many things.

[00:31:27] Do you learn things from your competition or you don't even.

[00:31:31] Nope.

[00:31:32] Nope.

[00:31:32] Okay.

[00:31:33] Cool.

[00:31:35] Nope.

[00:31:36] I just do what I know to do.

[00:31:37] Yeah.

[00:31:38] And that's good enough.

[00:31:39] That's good.

[00:31:39] Yeah.

[00:31:41] What worked for them might not work for you.

[00:31:43] Nope.

[00:31:43] It's not my lane.

[00:31:44] That's their lane.

[00:31:45] And there's enough for everybody.

[00:31:46] For sure.

[00:31:47] Does it?

[00:31:47] They're not there.

[00:31:49] They may be a competition, but they actually aren't.

[00:31:52] Yeah.

[00:31:52] Yeah.

[00:31:53] There's enough for everybody.

[00:31:55] That's not a mindset that I don't have anything to do with.

[00:31:57] You do different things.

[00:31:59] So how will you teach your kids?

[00:32:03] How, like what, what they want to go into or what the next step for them would be?

[00:32:08] How do you, how do you lead them?

[00:32:10] Yeah, that's a really good question.

[00:32:12] Because I don't want to put my call, the call on my life and what I'm doing onto them.

[00:32:19] Because they're different people.

[00:32:21] They, I'm trying to equip them, but they might have different, different roads to go.

[00:32:27] So I'm actually not sure about that.

[00:32:30] I can give them what I know.

[00:32:31] I do think we go from glory to glory though.

[00:32:33] So I will do better than my parents.

[00:32:35] My kids will do better than me.

[00:32:36] I hope that my kids do better than me in everything.

[00:32:39] So there comes a point where I, I don't really have a whole lot of say, but I've, I've, I think

[00:32:46] when you do know, then you do everything you can to share that.

[00:32:51] And that's it.

[00:32:51] But if you don't know as a parent, I feel like you need to be quiet.

[00:32:56] Yeah.

[00:32:56] Yeah.

[00:32:57] So I don't say a whole lot about that stuff unless I really know.

[00:33:00] Okay.

[00:33:00] Yeah.

[00:33:00] I let my kids figure that out.

[00:33:01] That's between them and God and their life.

[00:33:03] Okay.

[00:33:03] Yeah.

[00:33:04] So how did you balance, um, having that business and then being a mom as well?

[00:33:09] Um, very much like getting ready for, um, playing sports, you know, like, um, kind of stewarding

[00:33:22] my life properly.

[00:33:23] So I feel like if I steward my, um, what I'm eating, how I'm taking care of my body physically,

[00:33:30] how I'm taking care of my mind, I'm taking care of my spiritual appetite.

[00:33:34] If I'm taking care of those things, um, that will actually lead me to a really good balance

[00:33:41] with my kids and my work.

[00:33:42] And so being sensitive to what God is doing on many levels.

[00:33:48] So my grandmother would say, you look for God in your life and watch for him and then

[00:33:54] align yourself with what he's doing.

[00:33:56] So I'm following.

[00:33:58] I've often been put in a leadership position in my life, but I feel like such a follower.

[00:34:02] So, um, uh, because that is the biggest thing to me.

[00:34:07] So I look for what God is doing in my world.

[00:34:09] Um, my neighbors, my, my kids, my husband, my friends, I look for what he's doing.

[00:34:15] And then I follow him in that.

[00:34:20] This is an interesting question.

[00:34:22] I just, I'm thinking of, do you think that, uh, like the world will end in the, in the

[00:34:29] near future within the next 10, 15 years on September?

[00:34:33] No, I'm just kidding.

[00:34:34] Yeah.

[00:34:38] Um, uh, yeah, absolutely.

[00:34:41] Um, uh, you know, I, I don't know about everybody else, but I, I've always felt like I'm probably

[00:34:48] going to have to die for what I believe, you know, you know, and, and that's okay.

[00:34:52] For sure.

[00:34:52] But it's the best way to go.

[00:34:54] Yeah.

[00:34:55] Um, it's terrifying reading the Bible and reading about how everybody died or like,

[00:34:59] Oh, but if you, if you study it, they like lots of them didn't feel, feel pain.

[00:35:03] Totally.

[00:35:04] And, and, and you get to that point, but the first part when you're like, that's gruesome,

[00:35:09] like there's, there's such gory stuff, you know, and life can be so gory, you know?

[00:35:13] And I, I do not like the gory part of life.

[00:35:15] Um, but it's there and, and it, God does give you what you need when you need it.

[00:35:21] That is no question.

[00:35:23] Um, yeah, I think that the world could end at any point, but it does seem like in the

[00:35:30] next, you know, I don't know, five years, there's a lot of stuff going on.

[00:35:34] Yeah.

[00:35:35] Yeah.

[00:35:35] And just like, I've been studying, um, there's this other podcast about, I think it's called

[00:35:40] faith and friction.

[00:35:41] They're talking about the, the fig tree and watching the season and stuff.

[00:35:45] And I was like, Oh, it's pretty crazy.

[00:35:46] Yeah.

[00:35:47] Like, yeah.

[00:35:48] A lot of, a lot of it just points to something happening in the near future.

[00:35:53] So yeah.

[00:35:53] So just interested in what, what you had to say about that.

[00:35:56] Yes.

[00:35:56] I would agree.

[00:35:57] Yes.

[00:35:57] Okay.

[00:35:58] I think we're, we're just about done here.

[00:36:00] Do you have anything else you want to, you want to add?

[00:36:03] No, I don't think so.

[00:36:04] Nothing.

[00:36:05] Yeah.

[00:36:05] Nothing coming to mind.

[00:36:06] Um, let me see here.

[00:36:08] Sometimes, sometimes the best stuff that comes out is the stuff that I say.

[00:36:12] Yeah.

[00:36:12] Come at the end.

[00:36:13] Yeah.

[00:36:13] Yeah.

[00:36:14] I don't know.

[00:36:14] I think you, you asked some great questions.

[00:36:16] I think it's a cool.

[00:36:18] I think you're on a cool journey.

[00:36:20] Thanks for coming on the podcast.

[00:36:21] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:36:23] So there was one last thing that we remembered as soon as we shut the,

[00:36:27] the cameras off.

[00:36:28] So she was talking about, um, you writing music.

[00:36:32] Yes.

[00:36:33] Um, and anything creative, like you mentioned timing before.

[00:36:36] Timing is such a big issue in life.

[00:36:38] It really is.

[00:36:39] If you can be someone who can steward something really big and be quiet about it,

[00:36:44] you'll be given big things because you need to wait for the right time.

[00:36:49] Um, it's not going to be big if you release it at the wrong time, but at the right time,

[00:36:53] it's going to be huge and it's very important and impactful.

[00:36:56] So, and when you do something creative, like a podcast, like writing a song, um, you're stewarding

[00:37:02] something and timing is essential.

[00:37:06] Uh, you could be doing, writing a song and it's actually for somebody like 50 years later

[00:37:12] and that's the timing of it.

[00:37:13] And you have to be able to handle the disappointment or the, um, like, why did I do that?

[00:37:18] Like, why did we even do that?

[00:37:20] You know, that wasn't actually that important and it didn't even matter, you know, cause

[00:37:23] you want things to matter and that's a big deal.

[00:37:25] Um, so you have to be able to steward that without getting disappointed and it's stopping

[00:37:30] you from being creative.

[00:37:31] I think so many people are creative.

[00:37:33] I mean, I feel like that's how we're made and they're stopped because they don't see

[00:37:36] the results.

[00:37:39] But look at Hebrews 11, those people all died, huge, massive faith.

[00:37:45] And they all died with the things not happening at the time when they were alive, you know?

[00:37:50] So, and that's, that God looked at that as a, not a bad thing.

[00:37:54] So if God sees that as not a bad thing, we have to be okay with, um, just releasing

[00:38:00] things and giving them to God and watching him, you know, the timing is his.

[00:38:06] Yeah, for sure.

[00:38:07] Yeah.

[00:38:08] I remember the, the, the main thing about a startup is, is timing for sure.

[00:38:15] That's, that's always what it is.

[00:38:17] And, uh, yeah, obviously God's timing is completely different than ours.

[00:38:22] So being able to trust that, that, uh, God knows what's going on is huge.

[00:38:29] Some people call it magic.

[00:38:31] Whenever, whenever I hear somebody say magic, I'm like, they're actually saying timing.

[00:38:35] Okay.

[00:38:35] That's not what that is.

[00:38:36] It's timing.

[00:38:37] Okay.

[00:38:38] How so?

[00:38:38] Magic is timing.

[00:38:40] So people will say, Oh, that's magic.

[00:38:41] Or this is, it's not, it's because the timing was right.

[00:38:45] Hmm.

[00:38:45] Yeah.

[00:38:46] Yeah.

[00:38:47] Yeah.

[00:38:47] Crazy.

[00:38:49] Okay.

[00:38:49] Cool.

[00:38:50] That's it.

[00:38:50] That's it.

[00:38:53] Thank you everyone for listening.

[00:38:55] If you guys learned something or found it interesting, please share the video with someone as it helps

[00:39:01] me out a lot.

[00:39:02] Thanks.
